Time, Light & Silence – How My Art is Created
Art Philosophy and Perception Written by André WagnerPhotography does not begin with the camera.
It starts with an inner listening.
There are places where time goes slower.
In which the light not only illuminates, but penetrates.
Where silence is not emptiness, but space.
Space for something bigger than ourselves.
I don’t find these places – they find me.
And when they do, my real work begins.
The Art of Pausing
My artistic journey is a spiritual practice.
I enter a place not as a photographer, but as a seeker.
I watch. I listen. I wait.
Often hours, sometimes days.
Only when I have the feeling that the place is speaking to me – in light, wind, smell or energy – do I begin to photograph.
The camera is my tool, but my most important instrument is my own perception.
The ability to connect the visible with the invisible.
In moments of deep silence – when the outside dissolves – the image is created.
This process is strongly reminiscent of the inner work that I discussed in the text “Dimensions of the Self” Speak: Art begins where identity gains depth.
Light as a Spiritual Medium
For me, light is not just a physical phenomenon.
It's a carrier of consciousness. It's a symbol of the divine.
In many spiritual traditions, light stands for enlightenment, knowledge, presence.
I often work at twilight, in diffuse lighting conditions, or in the infrared,
because these types of light not only show - they also hide.
And it is precisely in the hidden that the secret lies.
Many of my recordings are made in spiritual centers, on rivers, in temples or in the middle of nature – such as in the Project “Art in Construction”where, through photography, places become bearers of silent meaning.
Places that not only need to be photographed, but experienced.
The silence between the pictures
The best shots are not made in the movement, but in the moment of complete standstill.
When everything settles down. When thoughts are silent.
When I myself become part of the room in which I photograph.
This silence is not empty – it is fulfilled.
It is what remains when everything else falls away.
And it's noticeable in my pictures.
You can't name it, but you can feel it.
An example of this is my Series on Sylt, which shows how light and time condense in space.
An invitation to compassion
My art is not a message, but an invitation.
It does not invite you to consume quickly, but to dwell.
To look at. To feel.
When a work touches, it is because it does not come from the head, but from the heart.
Because it doesn't want to explain, it wants to remember.
What has always been there: light. time. silence.
Also in my Code Blog I am investigating how digital forms of expression – such as NFT – transfer this meditative approach into digital.
