Artwork and cultural context

The gaze is returned

A man holds a camera before his face and points it towards the viewer. An almost empty, misty space lies behind him. This confrontation makes photography itself the subject: the person pictured can also make a picture and return the gaze.

The archive identifies him as a pilgrim at Keshi Ghat in Vrindavan, a place on a documented circumambulation route. The image adds an act of image-making to that religious setting: a personal journey is also recorded through photographs.
