Artwork text and archival details

Adapted from the artist’s archive.

At night in the bamboo grove of Arashiyama, repeated flashes of light reveal the fine structures of the stems. The archive describes hundreds of coordinated flashes accumulating into the image. What appears as a single illuminated scene is therefore an encounter assembled through time.

The vertical lines lead into depth, and reflections trace the smooth surfaces of the bamboo. Precise detail coexists with an unfamiliar atmosphere: the path seems to enter a space that could not be seen in this way in one instant. The photograph brings documentary clarity into relation with the imaginative possibilities of light.
