Bamboo in the Rain 1, Japan
2016
A closer look at the work
Glossy green bamboo stands at varying intervals before a deeply dark background. Pale rings divide the stems into long sections. Fine diagonal branches cross the uprights, introducing an irregular second direction. Leaves and low plants collect below; dense layering continues above without visible sky.
Gloss brings some stems close while others become indistinguishable in shade. Depth unfolds through changing zones of approach and withdrawal. Pale rings provide small resting points along long lines. Repetition yields an order that need not be symmetrical. The view stays with specific differences rather than deriving a universal symbolism from the subject.
