Bamboo twilight 2, Japan
2016
A closer look at the work
Closely spaced bamboo culms fill the image with vertical lines. Some are pale and smooth, others narrow and dark; horizontal nodes interrupt their length. A broad brown trunk stands among the finer poles. Small gaps open into black depth, giving the apparently flat pattern a partly inaccessible interior.
Bamboo Twilight 2 develops rhythm through repetition with distinct differences. Thickness, brightness and spacing change from culm to culm. The eye follows individual lines upwards but finds neither beginning nor end within the crop. Vegetation becomes a spatial order whose apparent regularity never settles into a perfectly uniform grid.
