Authentic Nature
Birkenwald, Finnland
2008
A closer look at the work
White birch trunks stand at varying distances in green grass. Dark bark markings interrupt their pale surfaces. A broad trunk left of centre is especially close, while narrower trees continue into the bright background. Tall grasses fill the gaps, giving the lower area a softer, less regular structure.
This Finnish woodland view connects repetition with spatial layering. White trunks resemble one another, yet differences in size and position prevent a uniform pattern. Looking moves between them and repeatedly meets a nearby surface. Depth emerges through many small openings rather than one route, making the forest appear both open and dense.
