Authentic Nature
Birkenwald - triptychon, Finnland
2008
A closer look at the work
Three panels of different widths form a connected black-and-white view. A birch stands in the broad centre before bright, misty woodland; narrow side panels continue rows of trees and dark foliage. Light reaches the ground in long bands. White intervals visibly interrupt the landscape while allowing it to register as one larger image.
The triptych makes framing part of the woodland view. Looking bridges gaps and decides which lines to continue. The central birch gains prominence without controlling the side spaces. Without colour, brightness and surface differences come forward, creating a spatial experience distributed across three separate pictorial fields.
