Iceland
Canyon of hvita 3, Island
2014
A closer look at the work
A pale river runs between high rock walls through the centre. Water drops over several levels in the background, producing a light veil. Dark vertical structures divide the right wall while green areas cover the left edge. The wide format gives the lateral rock masses considerable space, intensifying the narrowness of the waterway.
Canyon of Hvita 3 presents landscape as a space determined by its boundaries. White trails reveal moving water while the walls retain detailed surfaces. Looking enters the gorge but is stopped by its bend and spray. Expansiveness arises from the scale of enclosing forms rather than an open horizon.
