Daibutsu left hand, Japan
2016
A closer look at the work
A dark patinated hand hangs beside vertical folds of clothing. Two fingers approach one another around a small opening while the others point down. Blue sky provides an empty background and clarifies the contour. The close vertical crop excludes head and whole body, leaving gesture to determine the image.
Daibutsu Left Hand separates a detail from a larger figure. Finger spacing, the hand’s curve and its transition into fabric become particularly noticeable. The photograph does not fully explain the gesture but makes form its subject. An action appears in solid material: movement is suggested while the surface unmistakably retains the character of sculpture.
