Reflections of India
Descending to yamuna river, Indien
2011
Artwork and cultural context
Steps between city and river
Several people descend a broad staircase while the background disappears into mist. Diagonal steps structure the image and the figures lead the eye into depth. An everyday movement becomes a study of transition and uncertain space.
The Yamuna shapes the religious landscape of Mathura and Vrindavan. A ghat connects the built riverbank with the water. Here that connection becomes a bodily experience: a route travelled one step at a time.
