Water
Eisbach surfer, Deutschland
A closer look at the work
Several human outlines appear as translucent, repeated forms against a broad movement of water. Stones, a surfboard and other people's legs remain legible at the upper edge. Water crosses the image as a pale band, leaving the bodies both present and difficult to hold in view.
The sporting scene takes on an unusual temporal form. Overlapping transitions replace a single clearly defined pose. Balance becomes a question for the viewer too: the eye seeks support between sharply described objects and traces of movement.
