Authentic Nature
Goliath´s head, Frankreich
2008
A closer look at the work
Pale rounded rocks lie closely together on green ground. Projections and hollows in a foreground stone can suggest a face. Smaller forms continue behind it. Blue sky and clouds provide an open background, while the vertical format emphasises the formation’s upright presence.
Goliath’s Head names a possible figure within the stone. The photograph also shows the conditions of that resemblance: viewpoint, shadow and overlap make certain curves belong together. The apparent face remains bound to a material surface. Looking can alternate between recognition and inspection, discovering how quickly separate shapes become a body and a meaning.
