Romance of Elements
Harwood hole 1, Neuseeland
2006
Artwork text and archival details
Adapted from the artist’s archive.
In the moonlit forest near Harwood Hole, wet rocks surround a source of warm light. Their massive forms suggest figures gathered around an opening, while the glow reaches beyond them and throws shadows into the trees.
The archive’s interpretation turns this encounter into a question of expression and restraint: can surrounding forces contain the light, or does it continue to emerge? Cool and warm illumination give the scene its tension. The photograph allows the material presence of stone to coexist with this more inward reading.
