A closer look at the work
The Great Buddha sits frontally before a pale sky. Drapery, joined hands and greenish patina remain clearly visible. Pale moving visitors overlap in the lower image, partly obscuring the base while the statue’s closed outline remains distinct above them. Trees bound the space on either side.
At Kōtoku-in, the photograph establishes different kinds of visibility within one situation. The statue gains weight from its fixed position, while visitors leave more fleeting forms. Rather than simply opposing eternity and transience, the image shows how photographic duration orders an encounter with a monument: some bodies become transparent while another becomes the stable centre of looking.
