Reflections of India
Krishna plays holi, Indien
2014
A closer look at the work
A yellow-clad person reclines on a raised surface. A large decorated headdress stands out against dry brown ground and trees behind. Strong patches of colour mark face and hands. Several onlookers remain visible on the left, but the bent arm and spreading fabric concentrate attention on the foreground figure.
The title identifies a portrayal of Krishna associated with Holi. The image makes bodily presence within this role visible: a particular posture carries the signs of costume and festive colour. A sideways gaze establishes a relationship with something outside the frame. The photograph opens a space between represented figure and present body without fixing its full religious meaning.
