Water
Moonwaves 3, Portugal
2010
A closer look at the work
Silver highlights mark individual wave crests in a dark-blue seascape. The brightest band lies just below the centre, breaking into small irregular points. Dark foreground rocks bound the water, while the horizon barely separates from the sky. Closely related blues occupy much of the frame.
Moonwaves 3 gives movement no closed outline. Visibility occurs mainly where light meets a briefly raised surface. The eye joins separate glints into a wave, then loses them in dark intervals. Landscape emerges through changing recognisability: the sea feels continuous although the photograph reveals only temporarily visible portions of its surface.
