A closer look at the work
A nocturnal roofscape spreads beyond a pale parapet. A taller brick building with small illuminated windows stands near the centre. More lights and building edges gather behind it beneath a soft, relatively empty sky. Dark roofs, warm facades and cool distant lights establish successive layers.
The nearby parapet interrupts a seamless distant view. It makes the viewer's position tangible and places a boundary before the city lights. The photograph combines an overview of the city with the experience of occupying one particular, limited place within it.
