Water
Oasis of silence 2, Schottland
2018
A closer look at the work
A row of leafless trees follows the opposite shore. Slender trunks stand relatively upright on the left, while a larger tree spreads its branches sideways on the right. A pale strip of grass separates them from blue water. Behind them, densely textured terrain with pinkish passages occupies almost the full height, taking the place usually given to sky.
The trees resemble dark written marks against a coloured surface. Their differences remain legible within a shared horizontal arrangement. Water adds a quieter band beneath them without producing a complete mirror. The silence evoked by the title can be read through this relationship: branching growth and irregular terrain meet the firm line of the shore.
