Water
Ocean, Neuseeland
2006
A closer look at the work
Several dark rocks lie within an almost frame-filling turquoise surface. The largest sits left of centre, a narrower one to the right; smaller peaks continue the group backwards. White water outlines their edges before dissolving into soft trails. No horizon provides a distant shore as a fixed reference.
Ocean concentrates landscape into the relationship between a few bodies and a moving surface. Rough, clearly bounded upper faces remain while water alters the apparent lower edges. Differences in size establish proximity and distance. The open area is not an empty backdrop but an element that joins the stones while keeping them separate.
