Water
Ocean rocks, Neuseeland
2006
A closer look at the work
A sequence of dark rocks extends into the sea from a green coastal edge. Nearby stones are large and irregular; distant ones become small peaks. Pale strips of water outline their lower edges. Above lies a hazy pink sky, barely separated from the calm water by the horizon.
Ocean Rocks creates depth through a chain of intervals. The eye follows the stones outwards without finding a walkable route. The green foreground fixes the viewpoint while distance becomes increasingly indefinite. Landscape emerges between physical proximity and optical remoteness, with the rocks mediating that change like differently sized stations in a quiet movement.
