Water
Old man of storr, Schottland
A closer look at the work
A blue lake fills the lower frame. A small green island lies within it while pale-brown and grey shores rise behind. On the left, a stepped ridge carries several narrow rock pinnacles. Clear pale sky separates the landscape’s different edges precisely.
Old Man of Storr distributes attention between a prominent rock landscape and much nearer water. The small island provides an intermediate scale before the eye reaches distant heights. Rather than an isolated portrait of a formation, the image connects different distances. Water opens the foreground, mountains close the view, and sky gathers their forms into one scene.
