Water
Orange wave, Usa
2011
A closer look at the work
An orange band runs horizontally through an otherwise dark-blue and brown field. Its edges are soft, with brightness increasing towards the centre. A narrow dark horizon lies above; below, the glow fades into warmer shadow. Individual waves are barely distinguishable, leaving colour to provide spatial orientation.
The existing text describes a distant streetlamp reflected on waves near New York and an hour-long exposure. The photograph allows this concrete coastal situation to approach fields of colour. The band preserves movement as an extended appearance rather than one breaking wave, making the boundary between representational photography and abstraction visible through light, water and duration.
