Reflections of India
Pilgrim on purple dust 1, Indien
2014
A closer look at the work
Seen from above, a woman in a turquoise sari stands out against pink ground. Other bodies and lengths of cloth are cropped by the edges. The main figure remains distinct while belonging to a larger movement. Her head turns sideways against the direction of her walking body, and shadows give spatial orientation to the field of colour.
The photograph combines proximity and distance. Individual gestures are visible, but the elevated viewpoint prevents an encounter at eye level. Turquoise establishes a focal point without reducing the other people to mere background. The title identifies the figure as a pilgrim; the thoughts or feelings accompanying her journey cannot be established from her visible movement alone.
