Reflections of India
Pink sari, Indien
2011
A closer look at the work
A massive tree trunk with exposed roots dominates the foreground. Its rough surface occupies far more space than the woman in a pink sari beside it on the left. Beyond a low stone boundary, bright sky and pale mountain forms open into the distance. Foliage along the upper edge connects the tree’s dark proximity with that lighter view.
The strong colour of the cloth brings the small figure forward against muted stone and earth. Her raised arm creates a brief, mobile line beside the heavy trunk. Their unequal scale makes the place physically imaginable: somewhere a person might find shelter, distance and a view. The meaning of the gesture remains open.
