Water
Reflections, Portugal
2010
A closer look at the work
A narrow horizon separates the grey-blue sky from the darker sea. On the right, silvery light gathers on the water and breaks into countless small reflections. Black rocks along the lower edge give the viewer a nearby foothold; beyond them, a largely uninterrupted expanse opens up. This photograph of Portugal’s Atlantic coast holds the contrast between the fixed horizon and the moving surface within a restrained range of colours.
The title Reflections can refer both to reflected light and to thought. Light makes movement visible without clearly separating individual waves. The scene appears quiet, yet every detail remains subject to change. How long must we look before the apparently uniform surface reveals its differences? The photograph opens up this kind of attention without prescribing a particular mood or response.
