Romance of Elements
Release of energy, Neuseeland
2006
A closer look at the work
A solitary tree stands on dark ground beneath a broad blue night sky. Orange light spreads behind its trunk and forms a narrow band along the earth. The crown remains irregular and partly open, with a few stars visible above. A low horizon gives the sky much more space than the land.
Release of Energy opposes a small illuminated zone to an extensive setting. Light centres the tree without revealing its entire surroundings. Near the ground it feels warm and tangible; above it fades into blue. A limited intervention changes perception within a larger landscape without commanding the whole space.
