Urban · Visions of Time
Rotes Rathaus, Deutschland
2011
Artwork text and archival details
Adapted from the artist’s archive.
Berlin’s Rotes Rathaus glows warmly within a nocturnal panorama, with the television tower rising above the skyline. Reflections in the glass roof in the foreground introduce another layer, bringing different periods of the city’s architecture into a single view.
Long exposure gives the urban light a continuous presence while the sky changes through fine gradations of colour. The scene holds the city’s movement within an apparently quiet image. Its depth comes from the relation between reflected surfaces, illuminated buildings and the open space above them.
