A closer look at the work
A broad, perforated iron beam descends from the left edge of the image towards the centre. Beneath it, dark pillars stand in pale water; a hanging strip of metal forms an open loop between two supports. A massive pillar provides a counterweight on the right. Immediately to its left, human figures appear translucent, while a narrow view into the distance opens between the two rows of pillars.
The heavy structure and the barely tangible bodies share the same space but seem present in different ways. Decay can be read in the edges, holes and surfaces of the metal; in the people, even the outline begins to dissolve. The pale water connects these contrasts and brings out the intervals between the supports. What sustains the impression of permanence here: the mass of the material, or the order our gaze finds among its remains?
