A closer look at the work
Large rounded rocks lie close above a pebbled beach. Warm upper surfaces are bright; lower faces are dark and partly green. A narrow black gap remains between two masses. Sea and clouded sky open behind them on the right. The low viewpoint makes nearby stones look especially heavy and bodily.
The title suggests repose, but the image stays with visible form. Curvature, contact and shadow invite a reclining quality in inert material. Scale supports this reading: pebbles enlarge the boulders while the distant horizon releases their closeness. Bodily resemblance and stony otherness remain unresolved without assigning the rocks an experience.
