Tokyo skyline 1, Japan
2016
A closer look at the work
A large dark curve crosses the foreground and frames the distant city. Pylons and low buildings stand beneath it, with a slender tower rising into warm-grey sky farther back. The curve is blurred and partly cropped, making its exact function less clear than the opening it provides.
Tokyo Skyline 1 replaces an unobstructed overview with a view beneath a nearby obstacle. The city appears as a spatially limited sight rather than a complete whole. A distant tower gives orientation while the foreground form emphasises position. The photograph shows how every outlook depends on a viewpoint and on objects that are not necessarily its principal subject.
