The Infrared Journey
MAGMA DUCKS
2023
A closer look at the work
Five glowing red ducks move across turquoise water. Between them, a bright reflection breaks into small, shifting patches of light. Stones are visible beneath the surface on the left; farther up, reflections gather into lines that seem almost drawn. The eye moves between the transparent water and its reflective surface. The birds give this restless expanse distinct, clearly outlined points of focus.
In Magma Ducks, infrared photography makes a familiar observation appear strange. The red of the birds and the warm traces of light suggest heat, while the turquoise conveys a different temperature. The title opens up this association without literally turning water into lava. Small waves and the wakes of the swimming birds remain visible. What shapes our perception more strongly: our knowledge of an everyday scene, or the colour in which we encounter it?
