Romance of Elements
Torchlight, Neuseeland
Artwork text and archival details
Adapted from the artist’s archive.
Moonlight lies over a quiet New Zealand landscape while a spiral of fire follows the course of a riverbed. The luminous trace occupies a place where water is expected, bringing the elements into an unfamiliar relationship. The landscape remains recognisable, but its apparent order has changed.
Part of Romance of Elements, this land-art photograph uses the passage of light to reflect on balance and transformation. The fire suggests an arrival of energy within an established system: something that unsettles the existing arrangement and makes another possible. The scene leaves open whether that disturbance is disruptive, renewing, or both.
