A closer look at the work
A nearby red crossbar closes the upper edge; further gates recede into a narrow, offset depth. Black characters mark certain posts and beams. Oblique shadows cross the ground. Strong nearby forms and small distant rectangles establish a pronounced shift in scale.
Inscriptions show that these forms also carry signs. Without translating them, they remain visible interruptions of red surfaces. The space can be approached as passage among objects and as a sequence of written planes. Perspective eventually merges characters and posts, making distance a change in the possibility of reading.
